Reading for today:  Jeremiah 51-52
Original post:  August 31, 2014

Today we reach the end of the prophecy of Jeremiah.  His last prophecy has to do with Babylon, the nation that has overthrown Israel.   The first part of his prophecy was in chapter 50 (and several places earlier in the book).  Here he goes into great detail to describe the completeness of the destruction.   No one will be able to hide, no walls left standing, no treasure will be kept hidden. All of this is because the Babylonians were ruthless and arrogant as they destroyed other nations.   God allowed them to overthrow Israel because of Israel's worship of idols.   One would think that Babylon would not worship idols either, since it didn't work for Israel or any other nation.   I suppose that by the time Nebuchanezzar showed up in Jerusalem, it was hard to tell if Judah worshiped one god or many.   We hear descriptions of all the different idols they had set up in the temple.

The land is now desolate, and empty.  Most of the people are gone, the city is a pile of rubble, but it's remains are a constant reminder of the fact that the people are now slaves.   All because of disobedience.....and idol worship.    Daniel will tell us about the "abomination that causes desolation" in his accounts.   Certainly the idols that Judah has worshiped have caused the desolation that they now experience.

Chapter 50 has a refreshing reminder of the power of God.   My study bible says it is the same as chapter 10.   Jeremiah often repeats passages, it was one of his literary practices.    I think it would be comforting to remember the all power-fullness of God, especially when thinks are depressing.   It is encouraging to reflect on his ability to handle any situation.  It brings hope and strength for the dark moment.
